The FINANCIAL — President Viktor Yuschenko decided to sign a decree on putting his variant of the draft Constitution to a national referendum, he has announced when speaking to a military parade on the Independence Day.
"I want to announce my signing of a decree on putting to a national referendum the variant of the Constitution submitted [to the Verkhovna Rada] by the President of Ukraine," he said.
Yuschenko has stressed he is ready to listen to each Ukrainian's opinion as to this draft.
He is sure that the nationwide debate on the draft Constitution will stir much among the public and make parliamentary deputies to consider this draft.
As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Yuschenko proposed on March 31 that parliament amend the Constitution. His proposed amendments provide for renaming the parliament as the National Assembly and dividing it into two chambers: the Chamber of Deputies (lower chamber for 300 seats, elected for four years) and the Senate (upper chamber; should consist of senators elected for six years: three senators each from Crimea, the regions, Kyiv, and communities that have the same status as regions).
In June, the president announced his intention to call a national referendum for his variant of the Constitution.
