The FINANCIAL — CHISINAU. Registration of parties and candidates for early parliamentary elections in Moldova, scheduled for late November, starts on October 4, RIA Novosti informs.
Moldovan acting president Mihai Ghimpu announced the dissolution of parliament on September 28 and said that early parliamentary elections would take place on November 28.
The move is in line with the Constitutional Court's September 21 ruling, which said that a failure to elect a president in two subsequent elections provided sufficient grounds for the dissolution of parliament.
Moldova currently has 29 political parties and public political movements that can be registered to run at the elections. Those willing to pose as independent candidates have to collect 5,000 signatures in their support.
Parties that overcome the 4% election threshold make it to parliament. The threshold is 7% for two-party blocs and 9% for blocs comprising more than three parties. There are 101 mandates in all.
Experts say the Communist Party, the Liberal Democratic Party, the Democratic Party and the Liberal Party are likely to win the elections.
The political crisis in Moldova, which has been without a full-fledged president for 18 months, deepened after the September 5 referendum on whether the head of the state should be elected by a direct popular vote. It was declared invalid due to a low turnout.
