The FINANCIAL — WARSAW/MOSCOW. The families of those killed in April's deadly plane crash in western Russia that killed then Polish President Lech Kaczynski will attend the tragedy site on October 10, the Polish presidential press service said, according to RIA Novosti.
The worn-out Tu-154 with Kaczynski and other senior Polish officials on board crashed near the city of Smolensk, killing all 96 people, on April 10. The delegation was on its way to a commemoration ceremony of the 1940 Katyn massacre, in which more than 20,000 Poles had been executed by Soviet forces.
Russian and Polish investigators and experts jointly probe the causes of the crash, while Polish military prosecutors also conduct a separate investigation.
Polish opposition party leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski recently said he would not attend memorial events in Russia to mark six months since the deadly plane crash claimed the life of his twin brother.
Kaczynski, who fiercely criticized how Russian and Polish officials handled the investigation into the tragedy, said he would take part only in events which are "related to revealing the truth about the tragedy near Smolensk, but not in those aimed at concealing it."
Russia's first lady Svetlana Medvedev will attend the mourning events in Smolensk, the Kremlin said.
