The referendum on the entry of South Ossetia into Russia will take place after the presidential elections, which are scheduled for April 10 in the republic, Dina Gassiyeva, press secretary of self-proclaimed President Anatoly Bibilov, told RIA Novosti.
Self-proclaimed President of South Ossetia, Anatoly Bibilov, made an appeal in which he called unification within Russia an age-old dream and the main strategic goal of the Ossetian people. He also said that in the near future the republic would take legal steps to join Russia and organize a vote.
Another breakaway region of Georgia – Abkhazia, does not consider the chances of joining Russia.
“We respect the choice of South Ossetia. But we have a completely different story. We do not have such political parties and politicians who would raise the question (of joining the Russian Federation) in this way. And our Constitution does not allow this legislatively,” so called Security Council Secretary Sergei Shamba told Russia state controlled RIA Novosti.
Russia occupies Georgian territories since 1993.
