The FINANCIAL — Ryanair, the world’s favourite airline, today (12th Sept) welcomed its 4 millionth Ryanair passenger on flights to/from Knock as Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar, Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring, and Knock Chairman, Liam Scollan, presented Sr Maud Murphy from Carramore, Mayo, with a donation of €4,000 to a charity of her choice and a free holiday (for two people) to Lanzarote including flights, transfers and hotel accommodation at the 4 star Costa Calero Hotel.
Since Ryanair’s first Knock flight departed to London Luton in December 1986 Ryanair now operates 12 routes to deliver 400,000 passengers p.a. supporting and sustaining 400 local jobs in Mayo. Ryanair on its own accounted for over 67% of Knock airport’s record tally of 84,000 passengers in August.
According to Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary, “Ryanair is proud to have carried 4m passengers to and from Knock over the past 25 years, with passengers saving over €200m by switching to Ryanair’s low fares over Aer Lingus’s high fares. Ryanair will carry over 400,000 passengers through Knock in 2011, sustaining 400 jobs and underlining Ryanair’s commitment to and investment in tourism in the West of Ireland.”
“We are delighted to mark this milestone in the airport’s history and development with Ryanair and acknowledge their loyalty and commitment to the airport and the west of Ireland over the years in providing critical international access to the UK market, and in recent times opening up the outbound sun holiday destinations of Spain, Portugal and now the Canaries on a year round basis", said representative of Knock, Liam Scollan.
