The FINANCIAL — Almost 2.3 million mobile phones were sold in the Czech Republic in 2010. Of this total, 111,000 units were smartphones utilizing the Android operating system, as a GfK survey shows.
The number of Android-based smartphones grew by 100% year on year in 2010 and is expected to double again in 2011 reaching 200,000 units.
The market is, however, still dominated by propriety (closed) systems, which account for an overall sales of three fourths of units. The largest amount of phones are sold in December, and the smallest in January.
In 2010, a quarter of the mobile phones sold in Czech Republic were equipped with GPS, which is a twofold increase from 2009. There has also been an increase of the number of touch screen phones sold, with over 750,000 going over the Czech counters in 2010.
