The FINANCIAL — The Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania adopted the Statement on the introduction of a visa-free regime for Georgian citizens travelling to the Schengen area, according to MFA of Georgia.
The Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania underlined that, according to the European Commission’s assessment, Georgia has successfully fulfilled the requirements under the Visa Liberalisation Action Plan and that on 5 September 2016 the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) voted in favour of the introduction of the visa-free regime for Georgian citizens to travel to the Schengen area.
The Lithuanian Seimas called upon the Slovak Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament to adopt as soon as possible the necessary decisions on the introduction of a visa-free regime for Georgian citizens travelling to the Schengen area.
The Lithuanian Seimas noted that such actions would clearly illustrate that the ‘more for more’ principle of the European Neighbourhood Policy works in practice as well as enhance confidence of Georgian society in the European Union and its institutions and would constitute an important incentive for Georgia to advance with its reforms in the areas of democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights and freedoms.
The adoption of the Statement was preceded by the meeting held between Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Georgia to Lithuania Khatuna Salukvadze and members of the Lithuanian Seimas on 19 September. During the meeting, the Ambassador informed the Lithuanian officials on the reforms carried out in Georgia and on the country’s foreign political priorities. Particular emphasis was put on the issue of visa liberalisation with the EU.
