The FINANCIAL — The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) announced on October 1 that Air India will begin the first-ever nonstop flights between San Francisco and Delhi on December 2, 2015. Air India officials said the airline plans to launch service with three flights per week, on Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday, using Boeing 777 long-range aircraft.
“I am pleased to welcome Air India to San Francisco – the Innovation Capital of the World – after the productive visit by India Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the San Francisco Bay Area,” said Mayor Ed Lee. “By creating the first-ever nonstop service between San Francisco and Delhi, Air India has united two great cultural and economic centers of the world. As the only nonstop flight between India and the West Coast of the United States, I fully expect this new service to be a success.”
“I am excited that Air India has selected SFO for their newest route in the United States,” said Airport Director John L. Martin. “This service firmly establishes our Airport as the premier gateway to Asia and the Subcontinent, and provides an unparalleled level of global access to our guests.”
Air India is the national flag carrier of India, serving 31 international and 59 domestic destinations over four continents. The airline is a member of Star Alliance, the world’s largest global airline alliance, comprised of 28 international airlines serving 192 countries and 1,330 airports around the world.
The new flight makes SFO the fourth U.S. city served by Air India, joining Chicago O’Hare, New York (JFK) and Newark. Flights between SFO and Delhi will be operated using Boeing 777-200LR aircraft seating a total of 238 passengers, made up of 8 first class, 35 business class and 195 economy class seats. In Delhi, customers can enjoy seamless connections to nearly 100 daily Air India departures, including multiple flights to Bangalore, Mumbai, and Hyderabad, according to the San Francisco International Airport.
