The FINANCIAL — Martin Scorsese's ‘Shutter Island’ has topped US box office for the second week running, taking more than $22m (£14.5m) over the weekend.
“Cop Out,” an action-comedy starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan, opened in second place with $18.6 million for Time Warner Inc.’s Warner Bros., Hollywood.com Box-Office said yesterday in an e-mailed statement, as Bloomberg reports. “Shutter Island,” the first release this year from Viacom Inc.’s Paramount Pictures, stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a detective investigating a missing patient at the asylum. It has made $75.1 million in the past two weeks and had the biggest opening weekend ever for both Scorsese and DiCaprio.
“The marketing was really good,” Gitesh Pandya, editor of Box Office Guru LLC, said yesterday in an interview, according to the same source. “It was really marketed as a solid thriller from an Oscar-winning director that can appeal to all adult audiences.” “Cop Out,” from director Kevin Smith, tells the story of a pair of mismatched New York detectives who take on a Mexican drug dealer while searching for a valuable baseball card that’s been stolen.
Rounding off the top three was the horror film The Crazies which pulled in $16.5m (£10.9m)in its opening weekend, BBC reports. Fourth-placed Avatar's earnings are now more than $2bn (£1.3bn) worldwide.
According to the same source, the top five was completed by adventure-fantasy Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, starring Pierce Brosnan and Uma Thurman. The film earned $9.8m (£6.5m) in its third week of release.
“Valentine’s Day,” featuring Julia Roberts, Ashton Kutcher and Jessica Alba, slipped to sixth place from second with sales of $9.51 million, Bloomberg reports. The romantic comedy was released on Feb. 12, in time for the movie’s namesake holiday, and has taken in a total of $100.4 million.
“Dear John” fell to seventh place from sixth with $5 million for Sony Corp, the same source wrote. The movie, based on a Nicholas Sparks novel, is about a soldier on leave who falls in love with a college student.
