The FINANCIAL — KABUL. Taliban militants attacked checkpoints in northern and southern Afghanistan on December 14, killing 16 Afghan policemen.
Eight policemen were killed early on December 14 when the militants attacked a checkpoint in the northern province of Baghlan.
Later on December 14, the militants ambushed a police convoy in the city of Lashkar Gah in the southern province of Helmand by detonating a remote controlled bomb planted under a military vehicle, killing another 8 policemen.
U.S. President Barack Obama announced early in December that the country would send an additional 30,000 troops to Afghanistan in early 2010 to defeat the Taliban and establish law and order.
The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and a separate U.S.-led coalition, involved in Operation Enduring Freedom, have a total of 112,000 troops in Afghanistan. ISAF has 71,000 troops, about a half of which is contributed by the United States.
