The FINANCIAL — London Stansted saw nearly 2.2 million passengers pass through the airport in June, up 6.3% on the same month last year.
In the 12 months ending June 2016, the total number of passengers using Stansted grew to over 23.4 million, up 8.9% over the previous year, according to Stansted Airport.
Load factors – the number of passengers on each flight – averaged 90.1% for the month, the highest ever for June, beating the previous high of 88.4% set in 2015.
The volume of cargo handled at Stansted continued to increase with the monthly total up by 4.0% over June 2015 and the annual total growing by 6.7% as nearly 248,000 tonnes of goods and products passed through the airport.
Andrew Cowan, Stansted’s CEO, said: “Stansted’s June passenger traffic grew by 6.3% over last year as a result of the record high load factors on each flight plus increased capacity on key routes and new destinations including services to Vienna, Sofia and Orlando along with significant growth in traffic to Croatian and Portugal.
“This growth clearly reflects the continuing strong demand that exists across the region for convenient and affordable air travel that our extensive route network of over 170 destinations is able to provide.
“The increase in passenger numbers comes against the backdrop of more industrial action by air traffic controllers in France and Italy which resulted in the cancellation of 106 flights during the month.”
