The FINANCIAL — Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: JAVA) on October 12 announced the general availability of the Sun GlassFish Communications Server 2.0, its open source and high performance telco-grade application server that offers the foundation for a service delivery platform for the telecommunications industry.
A robust Java EE and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) convergence platform, the new GlassFish Communications Server has key new features, including SIP session replication, rolling upgrade and Diameter support. Based on the latest version of the Sun GlassFish Enterprise Server 2.1.1, the GlassFish Communications Server 2.0 helps service providers and network operators accelerate the adoption of an IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) architecture, by offering a highly scalable, standards-based platform that simplifies development of value-added applications and services that drive new revenue models, such as: VoIP, IPTV, virtual PBX, and fixed mobile convergence.
"For the past two years, we've been working with customers and a great developer community to make the GlassFish Communications Server one of the best high performance, standards-based Java EE and SIP convergence platforms available today," said Mark Herring, vice president of Software Infrastructure Marketing, Sun Microsystems. "With the new software, customers will be able to more easily build enterprise applications with integrated communications capabilities, and drive new revenue opportunities."
Developed in open source as part of Project Sailfin, the open-source version of the GlassFish Communications Server software has been downloaded more than 50,000 times in the past 12 months with a growing community of more than 250 developers. Customers and developers looking to create new SIP services can also participate in Project SailFin CAFE, a sub-project of Sailfin, which was created to help simplify the development of converged applications. Leading media and communications companies, such as Cedar Point Communications and Malden Labs, have adopted the GlassFish Communications Server.
"We chose the GlassFish Communications Server and the Sun software stack for its rich standard support, high performance and scalability to build our convergence solution," said Mike Wetzer, CEO, Malden Labs. "Sun's commitment to delivering high quality software developed in open source and backed with enterprise support allowed us to easily embrace this innovative platform and meet our customer needs."
Sun Continues to Enhance GlassFish Enterprise Server
With the latest version of GlassFish Enterprise Server, Sun delivers a scalable, reliable foundation for the Sun GlassFish Communications Server, and expands platform support to include AIX 6.1 with IBM JDK 6. With more than 10 million downloads in the last year, GlassFish Enterprise Server is one of the leading open source application servers in the industry today. Users of GlassFish Enterprise Server will benefit from enterprise reliability and performance with less complexity, and will be able to deliver new services in less time.
"GlassFish Enterprise Server is very up-to-date with the latest standards and Java EE enhancements," said Cyril Bouteille, Vice President, Engineering, TravelMuse. "In addition, the GlassFish architecture is a very good, low-cost, low-maintenance platform for operating our Web site."
