The FINANCIAL — The right bank of the Mtkvari River, Vake-Saburtalo districts and Davit Agmashenebeli Avenue are the areas of the capital city which have the highest numbers of car accidents.
Toyota, Volkswagen and Kia are the car brands most commonly involved in accidents, according to leading insurance companies in Georgia. The major causes of accidents are: driver distraction, ignorance of traffic signs and intoxication.
The most dangerous cohort of drivers on the road is those between the ages of 21 and 35.
“Here is the data of the car brands most frequently damaged in road accidents: Ford Transit (6.8%), Toyota Corolla (3.3%), Toyota Land Cruiser (3%), Samand (1.8%), Mondial 125 RT (2.4%), Volkswagen Passat (2.4%), Toyota Camry (2.3%), Skoda Octavia (1.9%), Kia Sportage (1.9%) and Kia Cerato (1.6%),” Giorgi Shengelia, Executive Director at IC Group, one of the leading insurance companies, told The FINANCIAL.
“The above mentioned percentages of damaged cars represent just a share of the total number of accidents recorded in the first half of 2012. The explanation behind the list is down to the fact that in our portfolio we have the largest number of the above-listed car brands. We cannot say therefore that these cars are more prone to accidents than others,” Shengelia said.
IC Group compensated 374 damaged vehicles in the first part of this year. The figure was 110 for the corresponding period of last year. The total number of vehicles insured at the company is 6,677.
“Not paying proper attention to distances, speeding, poor vehicle condition, intoxication, ignoring traffic signs, diversion (cell phone use, car CD player adjusting), falling asleep at the wheel, bad weather, wrong manoeuvring and inexperience are largely to blame for the majority of accidents,” Shengelia said.
The most high-risk vehicles of the customers of insurance company GPI Holding are so-called coupe and sports cars. “Negligence, ignoring traffic rules, speeding and intoxication are the main reasons for road accidents. The average age of car passengers getting into accidents is 21-40,” said Tinatin Stambolishvili, Head of the Marketing Communications Division of GPI Holding.
GPI Holding compensated around GEL 2 million for auto insurance during the first six months of 2012. During the same period of 2011 the sum amounted to GEL 1,900,000.
The company occupies 25% of the car insurance industry. Auto insurance at GPI Holding annually costs 3.5% of the vehicle’s total worth. 22 year old drivers dominate in the list of those insured by IC Group getting in to car accidents the most frequently.
According to Shengelia the right bank of the Mtkvari River, Agmashenebeli Avenue and Chavchavadze Avenue are the dominant places for car accidents.
Auto insurance at IC Group costs from 2.7% to 10% depending on the package. The insuring responsibility of the vehicle owners varies from USD 50 to USD 200 in accordance with the insurance limit. Insuring drivers and passengers from accident costs from USD 30 to 120 depending on the insurance limit.
Shengelia said that the company does not plan to increase prices in 2012.
“We do not have information to hand about permanent injuries resulting from our customers’ car accidents. In terms of serious injuries and automobile-related deaths though, we have one or two cases per year,” he added.
Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volkswagen, Opel, Audi, Mitsubishi, Kia, Hyundai and Ford are the top vehicles insured at IRAO experiencing physical damage the most frequently. The list was the same in 2011.
During the first six months of 2012 IRAO reimbursed the owners of 240 vehicles. 265 vehicles were compensated for the corresponding period of last year. In total the company insures 2,858 cars.
“Speeding, negligence, ignoring traffic signs, ignoring road lines and intoxication are the main factors causing car accidents,” said Nana Shonia, Head of the PR Department at IRAO.
“The average age of car owners most often getting into accidents is 21-35 year old males. There is no average age of females getting in to accidents,” Shonia said.
“The Vake-Saburtalo district is the main area where auto accidents take place,” said Shonia. She said that automobile accidents rarely cause serious or even permanent injuries. IRAO has had only two automobile related deaths.
The average price of vehicle insurance at our company is 4%. The company does not plan to increase costs in 2012.
