The FINANCIAL — Georgian First Deputy Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani took part in the 21st Conference of the Ministers and the 11th Conference of the Heads of State and Government of the Community of Portuguese-speaking countries (CPLP), held in Brasilia.
The Foreign Ministers of Timor-Leste and Brazil opened the summit. The Foreign Ministers of Portugal, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, Angola, SĂŁo TomĂ© and PrĂncipe addressed the attending audience, according to MFA of Georgia.
At the meeting, held in the frames of the session, the issue of co-operation between Georgia and the Portuguese-speaking countries was discussed. The Georgian side underlined the importance of the CPLP activity carried out by the organisation in different directions, including the co-operation between Georgia and the universities and diplomatic academies of the Portuguese-speaking countries.
David Zalkaliani informed the participants of the conference on the reforms Georgia has carried out in the spheres of public service, digital administration and open management. The First Deputy Minister also underlined that the Georgian Government has been successfully implementing the Agenda 2030 goals.
At the session, David Zalkaliani and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Georgia to Portugal Revaz Beshidze attended a dinner held on behalf of President of Brazil Michel Tener, during which a meeting with new Secretary General of the UN AntĂłnio Guterre was held. David Zalkaliani congratulated AntĂłnio Guterre on his election as the Secretary General of the UN Â and expressed the hope that the Secretary General will visit Georgia in the near future.
On the first day, David Zalkaliani held a bilateral meeting with Deputy Minister of the External Relations of Brazil Carlos Albert Simas MagalhĂŁes, during which the two sides focused on various directions of bilateral and multilateral co-operation, including, political consultations (due to be held in Georgia on 18 November), economy, culture, tourism, etc. The two sides also discussed the positive dynamics and increasing importance of co-operation in the frames of international organisations in Latin America and the Caribbean Sea region. Talking points also included the Parliamentary elections held in Georgia in October 2016. The Brazilian side congratulated Georgia on competitive and well-administered elections.
David Zalkaliani also met Portuguese Secretary of State of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Teresa Ribeiro and discussed main priorities of Georgia’s foreign policy, the country’s European and Euro-Atlantic integration and the progress Georgia has achieved in this process. Discussions also focused on the progress achieved by Georgia in the frames of the visa liberalisation action plan.
Talking points also included the developments in Georgia’s occupied regions, main issues of negotiations with the Russian Federation and co-operation with international organisations. The Portuguese side reaffirmed its support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
