The FINANCIAL — Georgian Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze met Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs Bridget Brink and co-chairs of the U.S.-Georgia Strategic Partnership Commission’s (SPC) Democracy and Governance Working Group.
Discussions focused on the current democratic reforms in Georgia and on the need to strengthen democratic institutions. The U.S. delegation welcomed Georgia’s reforms and the achieved progress in the spheres of democracy and governance, according to MFA of Georgia.
The two sides underlined the Georgian Government’s steps made in order to hold free, transparent and fair parliamentary elections and to ensure peaceful and stable pre-election environment. Â
Special emphasis was put on the importance of the U.S.’s support in the context of the country’s development and European and Euro-Atlantic integration.Â
The meeting from the Georgian side was attended by Georgian Foreign Ministers David Zalkaliani and David Dondua. The U.S. delegation included Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor Robert Berschinski, Assistant Administrator of USAID for Europe & Eurasia Thomas Melia, Coordinator for U.S. Assistance to Europe and Eurasia Alina Romanowski and Regional Director for Eurasia, Office of Overseas Prosecutorial Development, Assistance and Training Catherine Newcombe.
