The FINANCIAL — Georgian Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze met Speaker of the Seimas of Lithuania Loreta Graužinienė, according to MFA of Georgia.
The two sides underlined the existing intensive inter-parliamentary co-operation between their countries. Mikheil Janelidze thanked the Speaker of the Seimas for contribution made to development of bilateral relations.
Loreta Graužinienė, in turn, reaffirmed Lithuania’s support for Georgia’s European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations and underlined that Lithuania continues supporting Georgia’s political and practical activities in this direction.
The two sides expressed their hope that after the parliamentary elections due to be held in both countries in October, the legislative branches of the both countries will maintain active relations. Mikheil Janelidze informed Loreta Graužinienė on the process of current reforms in Georgia, facilitating the consolidation of democratic development. The huge potential of developing multilateral co-operation was also underlined.
Speaking about the bilateral relations, Mikheil Janelidze underlined the enhancement of co-operation in different spheres. Special attention was paid to the co-operation in the area of education and Lithuania’s contribution towards tuition fees of Georgian students.
The Speaker of the Seimas expressed her readiness to visit Georgia to take part in the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the restoration of Georgia’s independence.
Deputy Speaker of the Seimas, Chair of the Committee on European Affairs Gediminas Kirkilas held a working meeting with the Georgian Foreign Minister. The meeting was also attended by other members of the Committee both from the ruling coalition and from the parliamentary opposition, and by Chairman of the Lithuania-Georgia Friendship Group of the Seimas of Lithuania. It should be noted that this group is the largest group at the Seimas of Lithuania and it includes 68 members.
Mikheil Janelidze thanked the members of Seimas for Georgia’s strong support and underlined the particular friendly relations between the two countries.
Discussions focused on the process of preparations for parliamentary elections in both countries. Members of the Seimas positively assessed the progress achieved by Georgia on its path towards European and Euro-Atlantic integration, particularly, in the process of implementation of the visa liberalisation action plan and expressed their hope that the visa liberalization process will be concluded in the near future.
Mikheil Janelidze also spoke about Georgia’s expectations from the next NATO Summit in Warsaw and about the process of ongoing economic reforms in the country, and focused on the current security environment in the region.
In conclusion, members of the Committee on European Affairs of the Seimas expressed their readiness to visit Georgia in the near future.
