The FINANCIAL — If you are not satisfied with your current job and income, it’s never too late to get a new profession.
Economics experts say that Georgia has a serious shortage of properly trained specialists in all spheres. But there are still some professions which are more demanded due to recent developments in the Georgian economy.
“Architects and builder-engineers are among the most promising professions,” said Keti Patsatsia, expert of economics of the Association of Young Economists of Georgia (AYEG). “Auditors and Accountants are also always in demand.”
“Very often when large state projects are implemented, the Government invites engineers from China and India,” said Patsatsia. “If we had properly trained and skilled engineers, we wouldn’t have the need to invite others.”
Corresponding to the development of agriculture, especially animal husbandry and plant breeding, the need for vets and viticulturists is constantly increasing. The Government named agriculture as one of the top priority fields of the economy. The state is going to import new technologies. As well as the old equipment Georgia doesn’t have properly trained young professionals in this field.
Though journalism doesn’t seem a high paying career these days, Patsatsia sees the career as being much more promising in the nearest future.
“The media is significantly developing every day. Several new channels were opened simultaneously. A lot of channels are ambitious about being objective,” explained Patsatsia. “So I think that qualified specialists in this sphere will become one of the highest paying careers in Georgia.”
Soso Tsiskarishvili, an Expert of Economics, has another suggestion about promising careers in Georgia. A profession is promising if its relevant economic sector is properly developing in the country.
According to the National Statistics office of Georgia most Foreign Direct Investments by economic sectors are distributed among agriculture-fishing, industry and energy sectors. Over 90 million USD was invested in industry and 10 million USD in agriculture in 2010. In spite of these investments, the rate of unemployment is still high – 16.3% for the same period of time. However the number of employees in state sectors decreased and the employment rate of the labour force increased.
As Temur Gochitashvili, Expert of Energy Economics explains, qualified engineers in the renewable energy sector and oil industry are among the most needed.
Expert Keti Patsatsia believes that Georgia urgently needs trained personnel in customer service units such as restaurants, bars and cafes.
As she explained, it’s more complicated to hire local personnel for customer service in the regions of Georgia. It has to be commercially profitable as you don’t have to pay much. But at the same time the quality of service is extremely low. It frequently provokes dissatisfaction among customers.
ACT Research Centre did research in Georgia on “Which of the careers are most promising in your opinion?”.
It turned out that the urban population of Georgia believes that economist, doctor and lawyer are the most promising professions. 18% of respondents consider economists to be the most successful profession.
At the same time, the Career Advice Service reported the 8 most promising careers in the world for 2011. As it says in recent times the demand for translator/interpreters has significantly increased.
“As more and more businesses begin to adjust to the international marketplace, they require the services of people who are skilled in languages other than English. Translators have job security and solid earning potential.”
After them come medical technical officers, web designers, software specialists, accountants, massage therapists, conference planners and emergency services personnel.
