The FINANCIAL — Despite the financial turmoil in Europe, bank websites remain popular among internet users on the continent.
According to comScore, 38.7% of web users in Europe accessed a bank’s website in December 2011. Northern Europe was strongly represented, as the Netherlands had the highest percentage of internet users accessing banking sites, at 66.3%, followed by France (59.9%), Sweden (55.9%) the UK (53.2%) and Finland (53.1%).
When comScore measured total number of visitors to online banking sites in December 2011, France and the UK came out ahead of the smaller Northern European countries, with 25.8 million and 19.9 million visitors, respectively.
According to eMarketer, the most popular bank website across the continent belonged to Amsterdam-based ING Group, attracting 11.2 million unique internet users during the month. ING also has a robust online presence in countries on the other side of the Atlantic.
In March 2012, ING Direct Canada CMO Andrew Zimakas spoke with eMarketer about ING’s commitment to the digital banking experience: “For the longest time, digital has been a major component of our budget … because we’re a direct bank and because digital is such a major part of that direct experience.”
