The FINANCIAL — In a campaign by Manchester Business School to commemorate its 50th anniversary year, Alan Turing has been nominated and voted by the public as the North West’s most Original Thinker.
Turing was voted to the top spot as part of the social campaign to find Manchester’s 50 most original thinkers from the past or present, business or culture.
The pioneering computer scientist, mathematician and philosopher, was the creator of modern computing and also playing an integral part in breaking German codes in the Second World War.
Alan Turing’s connection to the North West came when he moved to The University of Manchester where he studied the use of computers.
It was here he published his best known paper, a philosophical paper including the idea of an ‘imitation game’ for comparing human and computer outputs (now called the Turing Test).
Head of School, Fiona Devine said: “At Manchester Business School we take inspiration from the city and region of we are a part . From engineers and scientists to artists and musicians, the North West has been a hotbed of creativity, innovation and an entrepreneurial spirit for several centuries.
“Our finalists, who were nominated by friends of the School via a social media campaign, exemplify these qualities and although we limited our campaign to 50 nominations, the list could have been much longer.
“We are proud to be part of a city and region that is home to so many people who think outside the box, take risks and change the world.”
