The FINANCIAL — Dexter Season 4 Episode 12, entitled The Getaway that was aired on the premium channel Showtime yesterday left its viewers in shock.
Nearly the entire season 4 of Dexter has revolved around a rival serial killer of Dexter Morgan's known and feared by the public as the 'Trinity Killer'. Before the final episode of the season, the writers did a trememdous job in setting up a brutal showdown between Dexter (Michael C. Hall) and Trinity (John Lithgow), according to Reel Empire. Even the producers had said previously that they wanted to deliver a shocking finale that no other show had done. They certainly hit the nail on the head.
In the shocking final moments of the Episode 12, Rita (Julie Benz), Dexter's wife, is brutally murdered by 'Trinity' in a bathtub while their baby, Harrison, is left crying in a pool of her blood. Dexter is left dwelling on memories of his own past in which he watched his mother die before his eyes and is soaked with her own blood.
The shocking twist, according to executive producer Clyde Phillips, was made quite late in the season as the writers didn't really know how to wrap up the show with a bang. In a nutshell, Dexter's final episode saw Dexter killing Trinity but not before Trinity murdered Rita in a bathtub. "The story evolved and it kind of became inevitable," Phillips told Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello of Rita's death, Buddy TV informs.
"We knew that we had to do more than kill Trinity. It's a little bit of a corner that we paint ourselves into. Last year we tried to avoid that and actually I think we didn't do as well as we could have. We killed off Jimmy Smits' character [in the 11th episode] of 12 episodes and then we had to figure out what we were going to do in the 12th episode, according to Buddy TV. This season, we knew that we were going to take Trinity out in the 12th episode and we think that the audience knew that, too. We had to raise the bar to as high as possible and then figure out what to do next year," Phillips added. Julie Benz, who played Rita since the first season of Dexter, was understandably not happy to learn about her character's tragic fate. However, Phillips was quick to point out that "she knew that this was a possibility" and that the actress was very professional about being written off the Showtime series. Phillips also disproved any notion of Rita's possible return as a ghost like Dexter's dad.
San Francisco Chronicle informs that Dexter is a Showtime Original Series about a man who works within the bowls of the criminal justice system, but goes out and kills those people already suspected of being guilty of a crime, making him a kind of serial killer.
The show is based on characters created by Jeff Lindsay for his series of Dexter novels. It was adapted for television by Emmy Award-winning screenwriter James Manos, Jr., who wrote the pilot episode, according to Wikipedia. On October 21, 2008, Showtime renewed the series for a fourth and fifth season, each consisting of twelve episodes. Production began in early 2009, with season four premiering September 27, 2009.
