The FINANCIAL — The consumer confidence index fell 0.3 point on the month to 40.1 in December, the Cabinet Office said on January 17, according to Nikkei.com.
That was the sixth straight month of declines, but up 2.5 points from the same month the previous year. The Cabinet Office maintained its overall assessment, saying consumer sentiment is "weakening."
The consumer confidence index is calculated based on consumers responses to questions including their living conditions and spending outlook for the next six months on a five-tier scale.
If all respondents say the economy is improving, the reading is 100; if all say the economy is getting worse, the figure is zero.
