The FINANCIAL — Japan's housing starts rose 0.6% year on year to 66,568 units in April, marking the first increase in 17 months, the Land Ministry said on May 31, according to Nikkei.com.
Starts for owner-occupied homes climbed 2.3% to 23,496 units, increasing for the sixth straight month. Those for rental homes sank 7.0% to 24,425 units, declining for the 17th straight month.
A total of 18,083 homes for sale began construction in April, up 27.4% on the month for the second straight month of increase. Of those, 9,668 were condominium units, rising 35.8% to mark the first expansion in 16 months.
