The FINANCIAL — Housing starts rose for the eighth straight month in January, climbing 2.7% on the year to 66,709 units, the Land Ministry said on February 28, according to Nikkei.com.
Starts for owner-occupied houses increased 5.5% to 22,299 units, for the 15th straight month of growth, while starts for rental homes fell 11.3% to 23,989 units, down for the fourth straight month.
Starts for condominiums and houses built for sale increased 22.3% to 19,903 units, for the 11th straight month of expansion.
Condo starts alone were up 31.1% at 10,435 units, rising for the eighth straight month.
