The FINANCIAL — Freelance writer, interior and clothes designer, consultant/expert, home beauty services, photographer and customer service agent are considered the top jobs for new mothers who are planning to work from home.
“The situation at Georgian companies is similar to offices around the globe. Most companies demand a minimum of 6-7 working hours at the office. That doesn’t mean however that it’s not possible to find an interesting or well-paid job when you have a small baby to look after or kids still in school. There are also many part-time jobs which can prove good for a mother’s income as well as provide intellectual stimulation,” said Tamuna Koberidze, Head of HR at Alliance Tbilisi.
Some examples of convenient and practical work opportunities for new mothers are listed below:
Freelance writer – GEL 500 per month — “Freelance writing is one of the most popular and flexible part-time jobs for mothers. If you have any talent for writing at all, you should definitely look for jobs as a reporter in magazines or journals. This can not only prove to be a useful source of income, but a chance to train your brain. Of course the salary of a freelance writer is not that high in Georgia, but even so it is a good opportunity for those who want to work from home,” Koberidze said.
Online research – GEL 200 per month — Depending on the subject and the size of the research, it usually takes up to ten days to gather a worthwhile body of data from the internet. Good knowledge of English or other languages is essential. Tips for PC-based research are free and can be found on the internet as well. “This job doesn’t take as much time as you might think and there is quite big demand for researchers,” Koberidze said.
Photo-service – GEL 1,000 per month — Arranging a photo studio at one’s home has become quite a popular trend in recent times. Ekaterine Abashidze, Head of HR at Women and Health, recommends that mothers who are interested in the profession open small photo studios at home and work from there. It can be a good source for income and will not take up too much time. For such home-based business one should have sufficient space and a professional photo camera, which costs around USD 4,000 together with studio lighting for the home.
“Being a photographer is quite easy nowadays. You just have to buy a high quality photo camera, organize a room for photo sessions and state your prices. There is huge demand for portraits and family photos. A culture of wedding photography has also become very developed in recent times. Photo studios have quite good income and if mothers officially register themselves as photographers then they can get quite a solid salary even while working from home,” Abashidze said.
Designer – GEL 1,000 per month — “For those who are artistic they can work as an interior or fashion designer and serve clients from home. This job is really creative and also allows mothers to work in comfort,” Abashidze noted.
Social media manager – GEL 700 per month — In recent times demand for social media managers has increased quite significantly. Companies are showing demand for people who can set up fan pages for businesses and design applications. Access to a computer and the internet are the only tools that this job requires. Being a social media manager is a top job for women who have no time for a standard 9-5 office job,” Simonishvili said.
Customer service agent – GEL 500 per month — “Some companies are looking for customer service agents. They are looking for people who can provide support to clients, organize paperwork and do some data processing as well. These tasks are easy to do from home, do not require much time but can bring in solid income for stay-at-home mums,” Simonishvili said.
This is phone-based work though, so one should take into account telephone costs in their salary invoices.
Another job that experts mentioned as a potentially lucrative job for stay-at-home mothers is childminding. They have the childcare experience so can babysit a neighbour’s children at the same time as taking care of their own. This can increase their monthly income at the same time as being a relatively flexible job.
According to Forbes, the ten best jobs for new mums are: Life Coach, Homeopath, Interior Designer, Market Research Analyst, Organic Farm Manager, Sonogram Technician, Lactation Consultant, Landscape Architect, City Planner, Day Care Centre Operator.
