The FINANCIAL — BRUSSELS. At least 20 people died and about 30 were injured when two trains collided head-on near the Belgian capital, Brussels, on February 15, a railway spokesman said.
The collision took place at 07.30 GMT near the station of Buizingen, to the south-west of the Belgian capital, amid snowy conditions.
The Telegraph website said one of the trains was en route from Leuven to Braine-le-Comte and the other from Quievrain to Liege. A third train was reportedly derailed as a result of the crash.
"According to preliminary information, the number of dead is between 20 and 27. Twenty-seven people were injured, some of them seriously," the Infrabel spokesman said.
The cause of the accident is not yet clear.
The Telegraph said high speed Eurostar and Thalys train services between London and Paris to Brussels have been suspended as a result of the accident.
