The FINANCIAL — Turkey's one of the leading telecommunications operators, Türk Telekom, has received an internationally respected award for its E-Fatura Forests project, which aims to increase environmental awareness among Turks by delivering electronic bills.
In a written statement yesterday, Türk Telekom said that the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) awarded the company with its excellence award in the category of "Corporate and Business Communications."
Türk Telekom's project with its solution partner Bersay Communication Consultancy was launched with the motto "Save a Tree, Plant a Tree." Türk Telekom successfully lobbied the government to allow the use of online billing instead of sending out paper documents to its subscribers, with the aim of saving forests, slashing costs and planting trees with the saved resources. CIPR praised Türk Telekom's efforts on its Web page, saying that the novelty of electronic billing was widely welcomed by consumers. "On the back of its own quantitative research, Turk Telekom's in-house team built a creative, multi-faceted campaign that tapped into the public's concern about environmental protection," CIPR said in its statement.
"The results of the electronic billing application have far exceeded Türk Telekom's ambitions, achieving widespread media attention and converting 850,000 customer statements. So far, 4.2 million tons of paper have been saved while around 89,000 trees have been planted in specially designed Türk Telekom forests in 69 cities throughout Turkey, helping lift the company's environmental credentials," Today's Zaman says.
The E-Fatura Forests project has received two other awards, from the International Public Relations Association (IPRA) and the Turkish Public Relations Association (TÜHİD).
