The FINANCIAL — Leading City figures gathered for the twelfth annual Lloyd’s City Dinner, hosted by Chairman John Nelson and featuring guest speaker Sir Michael Rake, President of The Confederation of British Industry (CBI). During his speech, John Nelson highlighted Lloyd’s strong 2013 results and thanked those in the Lloyd’s market who had contributed to Lloyd’s successful position in the industry to date, according to Lloyd’s.
The Chairman also put forward the case for the UK to remain together as part of the EU. “I would be extremely sad to see Scotland leave the United Kingdom and I very much hope that the Scottish people vote to stay in the Union. It is in the interests of the entire Scottish population, and the wider British population, all 65 million of us, who inhabit these extraordinary islands that the Union stays together,” he said.
“The prosperity of the UK, the City of London and Lloyd’s would best be served by Scotland staying in the UK and a strong United Kingdom staying in a competitive and efficient EU,” he added.
He concluded by highlighting Lloyd’s support of globalisation. “We have many challenges, but I can honestly say we don’t fear globalisation – we embrace it. We see the benefits: for Lloyd’s, London, a strong United Kingdom and for economies across the world. Lloyd’s is in great shape – and we have a great future,” he said.
