The FINANCIAL — Local government reform, gender-responsive recovery and improved service delivery in the crisis-affected communities of Ukraine will be the focus of additional EU funding aimed at peace-building and the prevention of further conflict in Eastern Ukraine.
The new EUR 10 million grant will support an already existing programme implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine dealing with the restoration of governance and reconciliation in crisis-affected communities in the country.
The additional funding from the European Union will enable the UNDP to further contribute to peace-building and the prevention of further conflict in Ukraine through effective and accountable decentralization and local government reform, gender-responsive recovery planning and equal access to services, as well as enhanced community security and social cohesion, said the UNDP press release.
According to the UNDP, the programme will put greater emphasis on establishing a reliable monitoring system, restoring critical infrastructure, spurring economic rejuvenation to boost livelihoods, supporting local authorities to coordinate recovery activities more effectively and restoring basic services with reduced corruption risks. It will also focus on improving security for internally displaced people and host communities. In cooperation with UN Women, it will help enhance the capacity of gender equality advocates and women affected by the conflict to demand accountability and transparency in local decision-making and spending.
