The FINANCIAL — The collection and recycling of e-waste and used batteries – is the focus of a new two-year EU-funded twinning project that was officially launched in Kyiv, Ukraine on 22 March 2016. The project is very timely as, according to the EU Delegation to Ukraine, every year the country has to dispose half a billion tonne of waste including hundreds of tonnes of harmful e-waste often containing hazardous substances (like heavy metals) that cause pollution and health problems.
This project will help to familiarise Ukrainian stakeholders with European practices and recycling technologies for e-wastes and used batteries while fostering approximation of the country’s legislation with relevant EU provisions, as foreseen in the Association Agreement, reports the EU Delegation to Ukraine, according to EU Neighbourhood Info.
“We have to be wise with waste, reducing its negative impact on environment and human health. The EU is moving gradually to a recycling society, reducing waste and using it as a resource wherever possible. Circular economy can be a major source of economic growth and jobs creation one day also in Ukraine, as it is today in the EU,” said Ambassador Jan Tombinski, head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine.
