The FINANCIAL — KIEV. Ukraine is to bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, sports minister Ravil Safiullin said on October 17, according to RIA Novosti.
President Viktor Yanukovych had earlier said a bid was a possibility.
“This is the task the authorities have set themselves,” Safiullin was quoted as saying by the UNIAN news agency.
The bid will be lodged in 2014, but $500 million will be allocated to the Games in the 2011 budget, he said.
The minister also said that it had not yet been decided which cities would be put forward.
Ukraine is to joint host Euro 2012 with Poland. Its preparation for the tournament has been a source of constant concern for European football’s governing body UEFA due to construction and infrastructure issues.
The 2014 Winter Olympics will take place in Russia’s Black Sea resort of Sochi.
