The FINANCIAL — It is reasonable to increase the planted areas of buckwheat in Ukraine to ensure the food security of the country, and keep the required level of carry-over stocks of buckwheat, declared Oleksiy Pavlenko, Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, on May 7.
According to the Ministry, in the current year the buckwheat areas reach 118 thsd ha, or 65% of the optimum needs. In 2013, the grain areas totaled 168 thsd ha. Khmelnitsky, Kirovograd, Vinnitsa, Kiev, Poltava, Sumy, Ternopil, Kharkiv, Chernihiv and other oblasts showed the largest decreasing rates.
The reduction can not be called critical, but the Ministry recommends to increase the planted areas by 50 thsd ha. The heads of state oblast administrations are entrusted to work out the issue with agrarians, said O.Pavlenko, according to APK-Inform.
According to the announcement, the spring field works in Ukraine are realized according to the plan, but with a slight delay compared with the previous year, due to weather conditions and significant rainfalls in some oblasts.
