The FINANCIAL — Ukraine and the United States want to deepen their cooperation for overcoming the financial and economic crisis.
Ukrainian News learned this from a statement by the press service of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the wording of which was made available to the agency.
According to the statement, Verkhovna Rada Chairman Volodymyr Lytvyn and US Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg discussed the matters during their meeting on April 27.
Volodymyr Lytvyn said the bilateral cooperation between Ukraine and the United States was of special character. Lytvyn voiced hope that the visit of the U.S. deputy secretary of state will help gain a better vision of ways for further cooperation.
James Steinberg said in turn that the position of the United States remains unchanged concerning the guarantees of Ukraine's security, support to Ukraine's independency, democratic reforms, and Ukraine's aspirations to join the European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
He also said Ukraine and the United States are strategic partners.
"The depth of our common values is extremely big and there is nothing separating us… The visit to Ukraine is extremely important to us for outlining the ways for further cooperation," he said, according to the press service of the Verkhovna Rada.
Verkhovna Rada Chairman Lytvyn said in turn he was confident that the overcoming of the crisis in Ukraine is possible with joint actions of all institutions of the government and a dialogue between the government and the public.
"Today's Ukraine needs the dialogue as never before and revival of the public trust in the government. We need to find a common language for the sake of the country. The crisis gives a chance to the Ukrainian people and politicians. This is the period for practical actions," Volodymyr Lytvyn said.
US Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg said the position of US President Barack Obama on the world financial crisis is that a solution to the situation should be sought outside politics.
"The crisis is the test of the democracy, the ability of the government institutions to go beyond politics and consolidate," he said.
The sides also discussed further cooperation between Ukraine and the International Monetary Fund.
According to Volodymyr Lytvyn, Ukraine needs cooperation with the International Monetary Fund, but the Cabinet of Ministers should pass systematic and transparent measures on revival of the economy and the financial and banking sector.
As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Ukraine and the United States want to step up the inter-parliamentary cooperation.
Ukraine views the United States as one of key advocates of Ukraine's ambitions to joint the European Union and NATO.
