The FINANCIAL — European Commission President José Manuel Barroso has expressed shock at the deaths of protesters in Ukraine, and offered deepest condolences to their families. “We deplore in strongest possible terms the use of force and violence,” he said, calling on all sides to take immediate steps that would help scale down tension.
In a statement, Barroso underlined “the fundamental responsibility of the Ukrainian authorities to take action to deescalate this crisis,” stressing the need “to engage in a genuine dialogue with the opposition and with civil society on the ways to overcome this deep crisis.”
The EU is following with great concern the recent restrictions on fundamental freedoms including freedom of expression and freedom of the media, Barroso said, adding that it will continue following the developments in Ukraine closely, “as well as assessing possible actions by the EU and consequences for our relations”, according to the EU Neighbourhood Info.
