The FINANCIAL — The credentials of Ukrainian deputy Andriy Shevchenko, who was nominated to replace Sergiy Vlasenko on the Ukrainian parliamentary delegation, were challenged at the opening of PACE’s spring session in Strasbourg.
Pieter Omtzigt (Netherlands, EPP/CD), who made the challenge on the procedural grounds that Mr Vlasenko had not yet ceased to be a member of the Assembly, was supported by at least ten members of the Assembly belonging to at least five national delegations.
Under the Rules, the Assembly’s Rules Committee will now meet to consider the challenge and may propose either to ratify the credentials, or not to ratify them, or to ratify them but with conditions attached. In the latter two cases, the Assembly will debate the issue later in the week. Mr Shevchenko continues to sit provisionally until the matter is decided, according to the Council of Europe.
