The FINANCIAL — Unilever Food Solutions has launched a new initiative to encourage chefs and caterers to fulfil Health Secretary Andrew Lansley's call to remove five billion calories a day from the nation's diet.
UFS has calculated that it takes a reduction of just 24 calories per dish – which chefs can bring about by small, simple changes – to make a big contribution to the Government's target.
To illustrate its point, the company has launched Ambu-lunch, a branded travelling ambulance that will tour the country to promote small changes to encourage healthier eating. The inside of the ambulance has been converted into a working restaurant.
Chefs on board the Ambu-lunch will prepare two samples of a popular dish, one of which is made with 24 fewer calories. UFS will ask people to vote on which they believe is the healthiest. The firm hopes that people will be unable to tell the difference.
According to Caterer and Hotelkeeper, the first stop for Ambu-lunch will be Old Palace Yard outside the Houses of Parliament, on Monday 18 June, where Unilever plans to invite Lansley to have lunch with UFS managing director Tracey Rogers.
Meanwhile Lisa Faulkner, 2010 BBC Celebrity MasterChef winner and health champion, will also be attending the launch.
To support the activity, Unilever Food Solutions will be launching a toolkit for chefs and operators to help them reduce calories and meet the secretary of state's target to reduce five billion calories a day. An online Calorie Calculator will be available to enable chefs to adjust the ingredients across a wide range of recipes and discover the impact on the calories in the dish.
