The FINANCIAL — The number of passengers handled by Vienna Airport climbed by 1.1% in May 2015 compared to the prior-year to a total of 2,069,731. Local passenger volume rose by 3.4% in the same period.
In contrast, Vienna Airport reported a 5.1% decline year-on-year in the number of transfer passengers in May 2015. The number of flight movements fell by 2.7%, whereas the maximum take-off weight showed a positive development, increasing by 3.2%. In May 2015 total air cargo rose by 0.8% from the previous year.
The total number of passengersd flying to Western Europe rose by 0.8% in May 2015. Eastern European passenger traffic was down 7.7%, which is related, amongst other factors, to the crises in Russia and the Ukraine. The Middle East region showed a rise of 11.6% in May 2015 compared to a 6.1% increase in passenger volume to the Far East. The number of passenger flying to North American and African destinations rose sharply by 21.0% and 11.8% respectively in May 2015 compared to May 2014, according to Vienna Airport.
The strategic investments of Flughafen Wien AG developed well. Malta Airport registered a 6.4% increase from January to May 2015 to 1,527,752 passengers. The number of passengers handled by Kosice Airport rose 14.8% in the same period to a total of 95,956 passengers.
