The FINANCIAL — In January 2016, the number of passengers handled by Vienna Airport increased by 1.2% in a year-on-year comparison to a total of 1,339,646. Local passenger volume was also up in the same period, rising by 3.3%.
This was in contrast to a 3.8% decline in the number of transfer passengers from the comparable level in January 2015. The number of flight movements decreased by 3.3%, whereas the maximum take off weight showed a slightly positive development, increasing by 0.9%. In January 2016 air cargo climbed 6.0% from the previous year, according to Vienna Airport.
The number of passengers flying to Western Europe rose by 4.6% in January 2016, whereas passenger volume to Eastern Europe fell by 10.7%. The Middle East regtion showed a drop of 1.6% in January 2016 in contrast to the 1.5% increase in the number of passengers flying to the Far East. Passenger volume to North American destinations was up 10.9% in January 2016, whereas the number of passengers to Africa was down by 9.8% from the prior-year level.
The strategic foreign investments of the Flughafen Wien Group developed well. The number of passengers handled by Kosice Airport rose 38.3% in January 2016 to a total of 23,970 passengers. Malta Airport registered 13.2% growth in passenger volume year-on-year to 236,552 passengers.
