The FINANCIAL — Supermarket chain Waitrose has made its first move into foodservice after it signed an on-board catering deal with Eurostar.
The supermarket division of the John Lewis Partnership will provide food for all of Eurostar’s services to the Continent when its service begins at the end of the month, according to the Telegraph. The value of the contract has not been disclosed.
Ready meals, sandwiches and drinks by Waitrose will be available to all Eurostar standard-class passengers, with the retailer expected to provide 90% of the products on offer on the trains.
David Warton, the business-to-business director of Waitrose, commented: “This is a very exciting opportunity for us to work with such a prestigious brand, which shares our commitment to quality and service.
“To be the first food brand that Eurostar’s customers experience when they are visiting Britain is tremendously powerful as we seek to expand our presence within northern Europe.”
Waitrose increased its export business by 20% on the previous year, for the 12 months ending January 2013, according to Caterer and Hotelkeeper.
