The FINANCIAL — Television is a big part of Americans’ lives. But with new technology like online streaming services changing the face of entertainment, do Americans watch TV differently than before? We decided to find out what America thinks.
While more than half of all Americans watch TV every day or nearly every day, the older the American, generally speaking, the more likely he or she is to be a daily viewer. Older Americans are also more likely to watch cable TV, according to Rasmussen Reports.
Adults under 40 are shifting away from traditional means of television consumption. Sixty-nine percent (69%) of these younger Americans use an online streaming service like Netflix or Hulu to watch TV and movies, compared to 39% of 40-64 year olds and just 11% of adults over 65. The under-40 crowd is also the most likely to watch a movie this way in an average week.
This helps explain the transition away from premium paid cable over the last couple years. In 2013, a third of Americans were most likely to watch a movie on TV showing on a channel like HBO or Showtime. Today, just 17% say the same. More now opt for one they’ve rented through a streaming or OnDemand service or a movie showing on regular network television.
