The FINANCIAL — Wizz Air, the largest low-cost airline in Central and Eastern Europe and Romania’s largest airline, announced on December 13 its massive expansion in Cluj for 2017.
The sixth aircraft is joining the Cluj-Napoca fleet in March 2017, along with the opening of 6 new exciting routes to 5 countries – Stockholm, Bratislava, Baden-Baden, Frankfurt Hahn, Larnaca and Malta. Proving its commitment to the region, WIZZ is thrilled to support the main international running event in Transylvania, Wizz Air Cluj-Napoca Marathon, on 9 April 2017.
The sixth aircraft represents an investment of further € 98 million* by WIZZ in Romania, creating 36 additional direct jobs to the current staff of 163 employees in Cluj-Napoca. The popular destinations announced today are bringing new opportunities for our customers to travel to Sweden, Slovakia, Germany, Cyprus and Malta. The new routes are commencing at the end of March 2017 and are already on sale on wizzair.com from just 39 RON**. Along with the newly announced routes Wizz Air also announced increase in frequencies of the most popular flights from Cluj-Napoca to Basel, Barcelona, Nuremberg, Milan Bergamo, Dortmund and London Luton, according to Wizz Air.
Demonstrating its dedication to the Cluj-Napoca community and the entire Transylvania region, WIZZ is announcing its first title sponsorship of the biggest running event in Transylvania, Wizz Air Cluj-Napoca Marathon, which will be held on 9 April 2017. WIZZ is known for organizing some of the most popular running events in Central and Eastern Europe promoting active lifestyle and mobility. Similar to WIZZ’s mindset of democratizing travel, running is a sport that can be exercised by almost anyone anywhere without major investments needed from individuals. In 2017 the marathon will be held in Cluj-Napoca for the seventh occasion and over 5,200 runners from 25 countries are expected to attend the biggest international marathon in Transylvania which next year will be dressed in WIZZ signature colors.
Over the past decade, since WIZZ opened the Cluj-Napoca base, the airline has continuously invested in its ever-growing networking, offering now 34 routes to 16 countries, including the domestic route to Bucharest. In the past 12 months ending on 30 November 2016 Wizz Air carried more than 1.3 million passengers to and from its Cluj-Napoca base, stimulating the local job market in aviation and tourism sectors and supporting over 950*** jobs in associated industries.

Demonstrating WIZZ’s dedication to its customers the airline is continuously investing in its Romanian operations. Throughout 2016 WIZZ already announced and is launching 28 new routes connecting Romania with the rest of Europe, while in early 2017 there are another 16 new Romanian routes that were already announced and will be launched. The latest routes announced for WIZZ Romanian customers are from Suceava to Venice Treviso, Bologna and Rome Ciampino and from Craiova to Cologne, Liverpool and Madrid, all commencing in March 2017.
