Production in Construction Up by 2.0% in Euro Area

The FINANCIAL -- In September 2018 compared with August 2018, seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector increased by 2.0% in the euro area (EA19) and by 1.7% in the EU28, according to first estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In August 2018, production in construction fell by 0.6% in the euro area and by 0.5% in the EU28.

In September 2018 compared with September 2017, production in construction increased by 4.6% in the euro area and by 4.2% in the EU28.

Monthly omparison by construction sector and by Member State

In the euro area in September 2018, compared with August 2018, building construction rose by 2.2% and civil engineering by 1.8%.

In the EU28, civil engineering rose by 3.1% and building construction by 1.4%. Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases in production in construction were recorded in France (+3.7%), Germany (+2.2%) and the United Kingdom (+1.8%). The largest decreases were observed in Bulgaria (-2.1%), Slovenia (-1.2%) and Sweden (-0.5%).

Annual comparison by construction sector and by Member State

In the euro area in September 2018, compared with September 2017, civil engineering rose by 4.8% and building construction by 4.3%. In the EU28, civil engineering rose by 7.7% and building construction by 2.9%.

Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases in production in construction were recorded in Hungary (+25.8%), Slovenia (+25.7%) and Poland (+20.2%). Decreases were observed in Bulgaria (-4.0%), Sweden (-1.5%) and Romania (-1.0%).
