The FINANCIAL — Saturday, December 12 marks the five-year anniversary of the Paris Agreement to address climate change.
WWF issued the following statement in response from Carter Roberts, President and CEO:
“Today marks the fifth anniversary of the Paris Agreement. While progress has been made in stemming the climate crisis, there’s a hard truth to face. The world has not yet delivered against the goals laid out in the agreement. That’s partly because the withdrawal of the United States sapped momentum from the global climate movement at a key moment. But as we look ahead to the next five years, we have reason for hope. Across the US, a coalition of states, cities, businesses, universities, faith organizations, tribes, and other actors have come together to say ‘we are still in.’ They represent more than half of the US population and nearly two-thirds of the US economy. These actors will bolster the renewed efforts of the US federal government on climate change, as President-elect Biden pursues a decisive new agenda that starts with rejoining the Paris Agreement. With the US now all in, we hope to meet our commitments and drive even bolder ambitions at home and abroad. History will measure the success of our movement by how we come together to address this shared challenge.”
