The FINANCIAL — President Viktor Yanukovych has said that Ukraine may join a common economic area with Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan on the terms of the World Trade Organization, of which Ukraine is a member.
Yanukovych was speaking in an interview on the Vesti television news program (Russia) on March 6.
"We are very far behind this process. Moreover, Ukraine has become a member of the World Trade Organization. Today, accession of Ukraine to this union is possible only on the terms of the World Trade Organization," Yanukovych said.
He stressed that Ukraine would like its neighbors to become members of the World Trade Organization as soon as possible.
As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin called on Ukraine on March 5 to join the common economic area.
The Ukrainian Presidential Administration's first deputy head Iryna Akymova has ruled out the possibility of Ukraine joining a Common Economic Area with Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan.
