The FINANCIAL — President Viktor Yuschenko has congratulated the Party of the Regions' leader Viktor Yanukovych on his election as the next president of Ukraine.
The presidential press service announced this in a statement.
"President Viktor Yuschenko has held a telephone conversation with Viktor Yanukovych. During the conversation, V. Yuschenko congratulated V. Yanukovych on his legitimate election to the post of President of Ukraine," the presidential press service said in the statement.
In particular, Yuschenko expressed the hope that Yanukovych, as the president-elect, will make all efforts to fulfill his main mission in the post of president – consolidation of Ukraine – because this is the appropriate moment to make the theme "east and west together" a reality.
Yuschenko also expressed the hope that Yanukovych will protect Ukraine's interests and protect the country's democracy in his capacity as president.
As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the Central Electoral Commission declared Yanukovych as the winner of the presidential elections on February 14.
However, the Supreme Administrative Court suspended the Central Electoral Commission's decision to announce the results of the second round of the presidential elections and declare Yanukovych as the winner of the elections on February 17, pending consideration of an appeal that Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko filed against the results of the presidential elections.
Tymoshenko withdrew her appeal against the results of the presidential elections on February 20.
The parliament has scheduled Yanukovych's inauguration for February 25.
