The FINANCIAL — President Viktor Yuschenko intends to veto the new version of the Law on Presidential Elections, which reduces the period of presidential election campaign.
Yuschenko's spokeswoman Iryna Vannykova announced this at a news briefing.
"The president considers the amendments to the legislation on Ukrainian presidential elections that the parliament adopted as a step back from democracy. The president intends to veto this law," Vannykova said.
According to her, the law reduces the rights and freedoms of citizens and complicates the mechanism via which citizens monitor elections.
As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the new version of the law on presidential elections that the parliament adopted on July 24 reduces the period of presidential election campaigns from 120 to 90 days.
The next presidential elections have been scheduled for January 17, 2010.
