The FINANCIAL – According to RIA Novosti, Ukraine has pledged an additional 6 million hryvnas ($1.18 million) to help the families of miners, who died in Sunday's (November 18)methane explosion, Deputy Prime Minister Andriy Klyuyev, said on November 19.
"I have ordered an extra 6 million hryvnas ($1.18 million) in addition to the 7.5 million ($1.48 million) allocated yesterday," Klyuyev said.
He added that the accident commission will begin distributing money on November 14, after the funerals of the first victims have taken place.
The explosion could become one of the worst in Ukraine's post-Soviet history with a death toll of 72 miners. Prosecutors have launched a criminal investigation into the cause of the blast, which will examine whether breaches in health and safety procedures led to the deaths of the mine workers.
Three days of mourning for those miners killed have been announced by local authorities.
