MP Taiwo Owatemi’s successful £900 expenses claim for ‘pet rent’, to allow her dog to stay in her London home, has reignited debate about the limits of what MPs should be able to claim on expenses. But some have defended Owatemi by saying landlords shouldn’t be able to charge extra rent for pets anyway, with Labour having previously pledged to outlaw the practice.
Nearly half of Britons (46%) agree that landlords should not be able to make people pay extra rent for owning a pet, compared to 38% who feel that they should be able to.
Younger Britons are most likely to see pet rent as unacceptable, with 61% of 18-24 year olds saying so. This compares to over 65s splitting 45% to 37% in favour of landlords having the option to do so.
