TBILISI, July 15, 2024- On July 13, 2024 became a festive day for Georgian rugby, which has rich traditions since the early 1960s, considerable successes in recent years and the sympathies of hundreds of millions of fans in dozens of countries. On July 13, 2024 the Georgian national team won away against the Japanese national team with a score of 25:23 – the match took place in Sendai.
This was Georgia’s third victory over a team representing Tier 1 in the last two years – this is how the elite level of rugby is called in the world. On July 10, 2022, Georgia won a test match against Italy( playing in the Six Nations Championship), with a score of 28:19 in Batumi. On November 19, 2022, in Cardiff, the Georgian national team won a test match against the Wales national team with a score of 13:12, which had previously repeatedly won the SNC and many times took prize places in this elite tournament, and also successfully performed at the World Cup.
And now a victory over Japan away. This was the seventh match in the history of the teams of the two countries, before that Japan had 5 victories and Georgia had one (2014), since 2020 Japan is a representative of
Tier 1 and therefore this victory of Georgia is of epochal significance. Since January 2024, the head coach of the Georgian national team is the famous English specialist Richard Cockerill.
The Georgian national team participated in the World Cup six times (2003, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019, 2023), 17 times won the “Rugby Europe International Championships”, the last time – March 17, 2024. The tournament does not include teams from the Six Nations Championship (England, Ireland, France, Scotland, Wales and Italy), but this does not decrease the effects the victory of Georgia, which is trying to win the right to join the SNC.
