The FINANCIAL – According to RIA Novosti, six people, including one child, have been killed in a car crash in the southern Russian Republic of Kalmykia, the local emergencies service said on November 19.
The head-on collision occurred late on Sunday on a major local highway. The only survivor was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.
The circumstances surrounding the accident are currently being established.
More than 27,000 people have been killed and 247,770 injured in 194,000 road accidents in Russia since January 2007. The majority of these were caused by violations of road traffic rules.
Tougher punishments for driving under the influence of alcohol have led to an almost 10% drop in drunk-driving accidents, however. The drop in child road deaths has seen saw a similar decrease.
