Flip flops fall into that tricky category of almost always being a no-no for fashion, yet extremely practical for life. I mean, what other shoe can you wear to get a pedicure? How else are you supposed to get around at the pool and beach? Which leaves us with a sartorial quandary: Is it ever okay to wear flip flops outside these designated zones?
If anyone can pull it off, it’s Brazilian brand Havaianas, creator of the original chic flip-flop, with the help of fashion blogger du jour Julie Sarinana of Sincerely Jules. We talked to Julie about how everyone can turn this summer staple into a fashion-do. And are toe rings ever okay?
What would you say to someone who thinks flip flops only belong at the beach or the pool?
Be open minded! Flip flops can really take most outfits into such a cool and laid back look outside of those environments. In California, for example, it’s part of our culture to wear flip flops! I would run around the city in ripped crop skinny jeans, a tee, a cross body bag and my favorite pair of black Havaianas!
3 best tips for styling them for everyday wear?
1. Always have your pedicure done. Nothing looks better than wearing flip flops with pretty feet and fresh polish!
2. Stick to easy-to-wear pieces like cotton dresses, cut off shorts, and boyfriend jeans—or my favorite, ripped skinnys.
3. Add an accessory to keep things fun—anklets are my favorite! Or to add color, you can wear a friendship bracelet as an anklet for a more playful look.
Flips flops can make for dirty feet—especially in a city. How do you deal?
That’s true! I recommend carrying a small package of baby wipes to easily wipe off any dirt..and always carry lotion to help keep your skin soft and moisturized especially if you’re wearing flip flops!
Favorite pedicure colors for summer?
This ones a toughie because I love color but I always tend to go for the neutral colors. Because my skin tone is so tanned, I like to go with white, beige, and pale pinks. They really complement my skin tone, plus it looks so clean and fresh! For color, I like coral and orange-red!
